Choking back rain water

Overnight cistern fills

Black brown with rot

History steeped thru limestone

No filter can clean

Horrors of the past

Bones & blood soak soil

Gravity does its duty

And we below are told

No complaints will be heard.

Take your daily portion

Bow & move on

The line is long

Shuffling in the dark

Hands bound behind

We pause, lean over

And sip our earthly portion.
