I enjoyed this story of Janet and Ivan. In 28 pages, Stallings explores the tragicomedy of life and death. When the couple first meet, neither is expecting much from the other beyond temporary diversion from the grayness of their lives. In a recurring theme in Stallings’ work, even these two get bogged down in the beginning in misunderstandings, suspicions, and confusion. By the end, however, we are left with some hope that the life that happens between plans can be fulfilling, even if not in the ways planned or even if only partially.
The short story format is perfect for busy people who find flash fictions a bit too short to be completely satisfying but who have a hard time finding several hours for uninterrupted reading of longer works. Many of Stallings’ major themes are found in this thoroughly enjoyable read of less than an hour.
