POEM: “Last Minute Attack”, notebooks of Jim Stallings

Last minute attack

Expected yesterday

Arrives now,

Swollen till tongue

Hangs heavy—

Bless the doctors

Who do their jobs

Once humbled—

The patient reclines

Grateful for help

Flopping about

A fish out of water

Did you think

You’d get away?

Silly fellow.

We’ve been casting

For you all along.
